Program Name: Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program Type: Internship program Age: 11 - 12th grade level Program Overview: SIMR is an 8-week summer internship program open to high school juniors and seniors. The program consists of hands-on research under the direct guidance of a one-on-one mentor at a top class lab within the Institutes of Medicine at Stanford University as well as select departments. Students applying to the program can choose from our eight areas of research (institutes). After being accepted, they are then assigned to a specific institute based on their choices. To learn more about each institute and the research involved, click on the links to the department websites below. Another option students in SIMR have is participating in the bioengineering bootcamp. This is a hands-on learning experience in bioengineering that does not involve a lab research component. Science on Saturday Lectures8/30/2020 Program Name: Science on Saturday Lectures Type: Lectures Age: Middle and high school students Program Overview: Science on Saturday is a series of science lectures for middle and high school students. Each topic highlights cutting-edge science occurring at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The talks are presented by LLNL scientists in collaboration with local area high school science teachers. At these presentations, worksheets are made available for a deeper learning opportunity. Worksheets are provided to students to follow along, corresponding Science on Saturday video recorded at the Bankhead Theatre in Livermore. SMASH Academy8/30/2020 Program Name: SMASH Academy Type: Student / Participant Grade: 9th Program Overview: SMASH Academy, our flagship program, is a FREE, 3 year, intensive STEM focused residential college prep program that empowers students to deepen their talents and pursue STEM careers. For 5 weeks every summer, scholars are immersed in tuition-free studies at leading universities throughout the country. During the academic year, scholars participate in monthly programming. They are coached by instructors that represent the future they can have. Because of their common background, students connect more deeply with instructors and gain true mentorship from these STEM professors and industry professionals. As they go through the program, scholars not only develop their skills and network – they also find their voice and build the confidence to become who they want to be. Estimated Program Date: Dates vary with locations. More specific details for dates will be announced near application openings. Most programs take place during summer. Eligibility and Requirements: - Applicants must meet all the eligibility requirements listed below in order to be considered for SMASH (no exceptions). - GPA: Must have minimum 8th grade 3.0 GPA or equivalent. - Grade Level: Be in the 9th grade at the time of application. - Math Skills: Have strong mathematics skills appropriate for your grade level, as determined by your state standardized math test scores. - Attend a public high school or private high school via scholarship. - Location: Reside in the United States within 50 miles of a SMASH site as determined by your zip code. Target Group: The criteria below describes who we aim to serve, however, applicants do not need to fulfill any or all of the criteria to apply to SMASH. This course teaches you how to draw by hand, starting from the ground up. After taking this course, you will have a very strong foundational understanding of how to draw by hand. You will begin by learning the elements and principles of design, where you'll learn about line, shape, value, color, contrast, and many more of the building blocks of drawing and design. Then, you will get right into an observational drawing exercise, where you'll learn how to map out and draw an object with proper proportions using lines and values. Finally, you'll learn how to draw a human face, and then how to draw a portrait from a photo reference. After taking this course, you will have a very strong foundational understanding of how to draw by hand. Also, as a follow up to this workshop, once we get back to 'normal' offline events, we will look to collaborate with other 'artsy' events, so this is a nice first step.
