Rising STEM Scholars Initiative9/3/2020 Program Name: Rising STEM Scholars Initiative Type: Student Resource Age: 8 - 12th grade level Program Overview: The Rising STEM Scholar Initiative is a year round program that offers 8th – 12th grade students in the Bay Area the opportunity to develop skills and learn about careers in STEM and CS. Science on Saturday Lectures8/29/2020 Program Name: Science on Saturday Lectures Type: Lectures Age: Middle and high school students Program Overview: Science on Saturday is a series of science lectures for middle and high school students. Each topic highlights cutting-edge science occurring at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The talks are presented by LLNL scientists in collaboration with local area high school science teachers. At these presentations, worksheets are made available for a deeper learning opportunity. Worksheets are provided to students to follow along, corresponding Science on Saturday video recorded at the Bankhead Theatre in Livermore. Galaxy Explorer Volunteer8/29/2020 Program Name: Galaxy Explorer at the Chabot Space and Science Center Type: Volunteer Grade: 9 - 11th Program Overview: The Galaxy Explorer program provides high school students with an opportunity for hands-on, fun community service work while giving them a chance to develop their job skills, increase their STEM knowledge, and enhance public speaking. The program is a year round commitment and Galaxy Explorers are required to participate in a minimum of 8 hours of enrichment per month. Wild Hospital Volunteer8/29/2020 Program Name: Galaxy Explorer at the Chabot Space and Science Center Type: Volunteer Ages: 15 and older Program Overview: Volunteers learn species identification, hygiene and safety precautions and protocols, proper diet and food preparation, physical therapy regimens, and proper handling techniques. Hospital staff and volunteers work to provide comprehensive diagnoses and treatments for our patients utilizing x-rays, blood work and more. Everyone works together to accommodate the feeding, cleaning and medication requirements of each patient. Young Adult Volunteer programs at WildCare educate and inform students of the plight of wildlife and our environment. Students see first-hand the results of humans’ direct and indirect influence on Marin’s native wildlife, both negative and positive. What is more important, these programs cause the student to think and question our attitudes toward the environment, perhaps developing possible solutions. Working at WildCare empowers students with their ability to affect change. Estimated Program Date: Shifts are scheduled 7 days a week at 9am – 1pm or 1pm – 5pm year-round Eligibility and Requirements: - Volunteers must be 15 years or older - Volunteers age 15 – 17 will be part of our WildCare Student Volunteer Program. - All volunteers must attend a Volunteer Orientation. - All volunteers must fill out, sign, and turn in all required documents. - New incoming volunteers must attend a shadowing day and four required classes (a full 10 hours) of hands-on training for the Wildlife Hospital. - Volunteers ages 15-17 must commit to one shift a week between 1.5 to 4-hours long (hours are adjusted during school). The minimum commitment for new hospital volunteers is from March through the end of WildCare’s “Baby Season” (usually ending late October). Target Group: Committed volunteers who share a love for animals and deep care for wildlife patients Application Detail: Due to the pandemic, operations for new volunteers for onsite positions at WildCare are temporarily suspended. All teens enter the program in May, volunteering in various capacities for the summer or throughout the year. This is a great way for teens to fulfill community service requirements, gain job skills, and learn about communicating science to the public. Volunteering here will give teens great experience in public speaking, education, customer service, and general job skills. Volunteers will work with Hall staff, UC Berkeley college interns, and other teens from all around the Bay Area. SMASH Academy8/28/2020 Program Name: SMASH Academy Type: Student / Participant Grade: 9th Program Overview: SMASH Academy, our flagship program, is a FREE, 3 year, intensive STEM focused residential college prep program that empowers students to deepen their talents and pursue STEM careers. For 5 weeks every summer, scholars are immersed in tuition-free studies at leading universities throughout the country. During the academic year, scholars participate in monthly programming. They are coached by instructors that represent the future they can have. Because of their common background, students connect more deeply with instructors and gain true mentorship from these STEM professors and industry professionals. As they go through the program, scholars not only develop their skills and network – they also find their voice and build the confidence to become who they want to be. Estimated Program Date: Dates vary with locations. More specific details for dates will be announced near application openings. Most programs take place during summer. Eligibility and Requirements: - Applicants must meet all the eligibility requirements listed below in order to be considered for SMASH (no exceptions). - GPA: Must have minimum 8th grade 3.0 GPA or equivalent. - Grade Level: Be in the 9th grade at the time of application. - Math Skills: Have strong mathematics skills appropriate for your grade level, as determined by your state standardized math test scores. - Attend a public high school or private high school via scholarship. - Location: Reside in the United States within 50 miles of a SMASH site as determined by your zip code. Target Group: The criteria below describes who we aim to serve, however, applicants do not need to fulfill any or all of the criteria to apply to SMASH. From groups traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics: African American, Chicano/Latinx, Native American, Filipino, Pacific Islander, Southeast Asian (i.e. Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Vietnamese) or mixed race/multiracial groups with at least one parent from the above ethnicities. First-generation college students: This means that neither one of your parents received a bachelor’s or 4-year degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in the United States. If you have a sibling in college you are still first generation.
