Program Name: SWE @ UCD: Mentorship for Prospective Engineering Students Type: Mentorship Age: High school seniors Program Overview: This Fall the Society of Women Engineers at UC Davis is hosting a 10 week long mentorship program to support underrepresented students who are interested in applying to engineering majors. There will be sessions with UC Davis College of Engineering advisors, professors, current students, and alumni, as well as smaller group mentorship sessions with current engineering students to help answer questions and provide more individualized support. The program will run on Thursdays evenings (5pm PST - 6pm PST) from September 24th to November 22nd and is open to high school seniors who identify as female, gender non-comforming, non-binary, or gender expansive individuals. Note that the program is completely free, all sessions will be conducted over Zoom, and all registered students will be accepted! Please fill out the registration form before September 24th. Program Name: Fundamentals of Digital Drawing in Photoshop Workshop Type: Workshop Recommended Age: All ages welcome Workshop Overview: No better time than now to develop some new tech tools like Photoshop! In this workshop series, we will talk about a variety of different methods of drawing and also how we can use a digital format to enhance these methods. We will start by getting familiar with the basic lines we can create in Photoshop. We'll then get into some principle techniques for the beginning stages of a creation, like gesture drawing and scribble drawing that allow us to get our ideas down on paper without getting too caught up in minute details. Next, we'll work on some methods of line work, like contour lines, that will help us define the shapes of our drawing. We'll also learn how to use hatching to give our drawing tonal value. Finally, we'll take a look at how we can combine our techniques to produce a composition. This workshop series goes over many techniques that you can use in digital drawing and traditional drawing, and by the end of this course you will have a better understanding of how to create your own digital drawing from beginning to end. Helix Summer Medical Program8/30/2020 Program Name: Helix Summer Medical Program Type: Student/ Participant Age: At least 16 years old Program Overview: The Helix Summer Medical Program is a free, four-week program in the Bay Area that guides students through an exploration of different careers in the healthcare field. The first week of the program is an overnight stay on the UC Berkeley campus from Saturday through Friday, featuring a Core Curriculum comprised of lectures, biological and clinical labs, and professional development. In this week, students will also develop a research project to be presented to family members and community health professionals at the culminating Helix Symposium. For the next two weeks, students will participate in Clinical Shadowing with four different preceptors across the pre-hospital (Emergency Medical Services), community clinic, and hospital settings and rotate through these placements. Every Friday, students will return to UC Berkeley for Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program faculty-led Clinical Shadowing Debrief sessions to openly share and discuss their weekly shadowing experiences. In the fourth and final week students will venture through Site Visits in which they will visit unique and exclusive healthcare centers and/or events including, but not limited to the Kaiser Permanente Garfield Medical Innovation Center, UCSF Cadaver Lab, and UCSF Medical School. Estimated Program Date: 4-week program runs during the summer Eligibility and Requirements: You must be at least 16 by the first day of the program in order to qualify. Unfortunately, due to state regulations governing some program activities, there are no exceptions to this rule. Target Group: Students are considering a career in the medical field and are seeking opportunities to shadow health professionals. Application Detail: Applications are currently closed and will reopen mid-October. A mandatory parent orientation will be held in order to inform parents about the program. At least one parent must be present for the student to be allowed into the program. Paperwork and legal materials will also be due in-person at this orientation. This is absolutely mandatory and non-negotiable. We reserve the right to rescind your student's acceptance should you fail to attend this orientation. Mock Trial Program8/30/2020 Program Name: Mock Trial Program Type: Student Age: High school student Program Overview: In cooperation with Richmond-area high schools, we operate after-school Mock Trial programs serving diverse and disadvantaged youth. Practicing attorneys coach students in how to conduct a criminal trial as a team, fostering their analysis and public presentation skills. Each school’s team competes against other high schools in an annual county-wide competition, with students playing the roles of attorneys and witnesses in front of real judges. The students have the opportunity to compete in a rigorous setting that has traditionally included only students from affluent backgrounds, and they discover the satisfaction that comes from hard work, teamwork, and mastery. They benefit from greater self-confidence, academic and practical skills, and higher academic aspirations. The mock trial teams also have a positive affect on the entire school community, by building excitement and recognition around an academically rigorous activity.
