Wild Hospital Volunteer8/29/2020 Program Name: Galaxy Explorer at the Chabot Space and Science Center Type: Volunteer Ages: 15 and older Program Overview: Volunteers learn species identification, hygiene and safety precautions and protocols, proper diet and food preparation, physical therapy regimens, and proper handling techniques. Hospital staff and volunteers work to provide comprehensive diagnoses and treatments for our patients utilizing x-rays, blood work and more. Everyone works together to accommodate the feeding, cleaning and medication requirements of each patient. Young Adult Volunteer programs at WildCare educate and inform students of the plight of wildlife and our environment. Students see first-hand the results of humans’ direct and indirect influence on Marin’s native wildlife, both negative and positive. What is more important, these programs cause the student to think and question our attitudes toward the environment, perhaps developing possible solutions. Working at WildCare empowers students with their ability to affect change. Estimated Program Date: Shifts are scheduled 7 days a week at 9am – 1pm or 1pm – 5pm year-round Eligibility and Requirements: - Volunteers must be 15 years or older - Volunteers age 15 – 17 will be part of our WildCare Student Volunteer Program. - All volunteers must attend a Volunteer Orientation. - All volunteers must fill out, sign, and turn in all required documents. - New incoming volunteers must attend a shadowing day and four required classes (a full 10 hours) of hands-on training for the Wildlife Hospital. - Volunteers ages 15-17 must commit to one shift a week between 1.5 to 4-hours long (hours are adjusted during school). The minimum commitment for new hospital volunteers is from March through the end of WildCare’s “Baby Season” (usually ending late October). Target Group: Committed volunteers who share a love for animals and deep care for wildlife patients Application Detail: Due to the pandemic, operations for new volunteers for onsite positions at WildCare are temporarily suspended. If you are 15 years of age or older and primarily interested in volunteering in our Wildlife Hospital, in previous years, we held the required orientation and 12 hours of training once per year in early spring. We're hoping to resume volunteer operations as soon as possible including the orientation and training in February/March but we don't have a firm timeline yet due to the health concerns.
